Fluorene has the least amount of polarity based on structure and when it was mixed with non-polar and slightly polar solvents, its mobile phase moved the furthest. Such that when Fluorene was put in 25% EtOAc, which is 75% polar, its mobile phase was the furthest, followed by 90% polar in 10% EtOAc in hexane, and its most solid phase was in 100% hexane. 9–fluorenol is the highest polar compound based on structure and when it was mixed with a polar solvent its mobile phase was the slowest, therefore, it did not travel very far up the silica gel plate.When 9-fluorenol was mixed in slightly polar solvent, 10% EtOAc, its mobile phase also did not travel very far. The only time 9-fluorenol mobile phase travelled up the silica gel plate is when it was combined with 25% EtOAc in hexane because 75% of the solvent was polar, and the remaining 25% allowed its mobile phase to move up the silica gel plate. 9–fluorenone is the second most polar compound when mixed with the above solvents. Based on its structure, when mixed with 100% hexane there was no mobile phase because polar compounds stick with polar solvents.When 9-fluorenone was combined with 10% EtOAc, given about 90% polar, there was a slight mobile phase, moving just slightly up the silica gel plate. Its mobile phase moved the furthest when it was combined in 25% EtOAc in hexane, given about 75% polar, as the remaining 25% was able to move the compound up the polar silica gel plate. Based on the compounds and the Rf values, the compounds with larger Rf values means that the mobile phase traveled the furthest on the polar silica gel plate. Also, the compounds with the larger Rf value indicates that it was a less polar structure, as it interacts less strongly with the polar absorbent on the TLC plate.3. Since there was ‘lag’ the Rf value can be considered ambiguous and it is not very telling if the compounds are in fact different. When mixed in 25% EtOAc in hexane, the Rf value differed by 0. 02 cm (trans-stilbene value of 0.96 cm and dibromide value of 0. 4cm). The trans-stilbene and the dibromide do not share identical Rf values, but we can assume since there is only a 0. 02 cm different, it is not enough to say that they are two distinct substances; rather there is some mixture of trans-stilbene in the dibromide, because some of the characteristics may be similar.6. Briefly discuss your TLC results for the â⠂¬Å"headache relief† tablets. Do the tablets seem to contain caffeine? Explain. Does TLC prove your answer? The mobile phase is an inert gas, generally He2 or N2 does not compete with the stationary phase like TLC or LC, where the mobile phase actively competes with the stationary phase. The mobile phase does not interact with the compounds during GC, while they do interact in liquid chromatography and TLC.8. Later, we will cover mass spectrometry, and will likely also mention a combined analytical technique called GC-MS (gas chromatography-mass spectrometry). Briefly, but clearly, explain how GC-MS would be better at solving the â€Å"caffeine crime† compared to simple TLC. GC-MS combines gas-liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry to identify different substances with in a test sample.It is used to perform specific tests that can positively identify the actual presence of a particular substance in a given sample. Although both GC-MS and TLC can identify substances in a given sample, the TLC is a more non-specific test that could lead to false positives identification. If the Rf values are identical, one can assume that the substance are the same and the GC-MS would be better to differentiate the Rf values for two separate substances in a given sample, giving a more accurate identification.

First “Misleading” Impressions

Cypress Ranch High School Ms. Piotrowsky 3rd Period English K/Dual First â€Å"Misleading† Impression In Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice the most common and concurrent theme is probably the theme of first impression. The entire novel, from beginning to end, travels around conclusions made from first impressions and how, in cases, they are wrong. In fact, the first proposition for the title of the novel was First Impressions not Pride and Prejudice. As the theme of the novel progresses, characters realize that their conclusions made based on first impressions were flawed.As this happens, new relationships develop. Jane Austen even makes the reader believe or create its own first impressions only to later realize that they were wrong. During this time period, the idea of wealth and class was predominant among society; therefore, most first impressions were based on the amount of money a person had or on his/her ancestry. The main theme of first impressions goes around à ¢â‚¬Å"Elizabeth, the heroine, and Darcy, her eventual husband, the chief obstacle resides in the book’s original title: First Impressions. (Sherry, Pride and Prejudice limits of society) At the ball, Mr. Bingley encourages Mr. Darcy to dance with Elizabeth but he refuses by stating, â€Å"she is tolerable, but not handsome enough to tempt him† (Austen 13); and Elizabeth’s first impression about Mr. Darcy is that â€Å" he is proud, above his company, and above being pleased† (Austen 17). The reader understands that physical appearance is not the only factor that drives Mr. Darcy towards that opinion, but her lack of wealth and her vast family are. Throughout the novel the reader experiences realizations and transformations of views.At first Austen makes the reader create false impressions, just as the characters in the novel, only to later realize that the opinions the reader had about the characters were flawed. Many critics agree that â€Å"†¦In t his novel by Jane Austen, we don’t only see how first impressions affect relationships, but we also see how the characters in this story experience transformation through their experiences of first impressions, pride and prejudice. † (Stasio, An Evolutionary Approach to Jane Austen). Ironically enough, Elizabeth realizes â€Å"that they had entirely mistaken Mr.Darcy’s character† (Austen 219). What at first was a feeling of string repulsion towards one another slowly became a feeling of attraction. As the novel progresses, different events occur that come to the final transformation of Elizabeth’s first impressions. She learns through different sources that Mr. Darcy is not the man she believes him to be; and that most of the rumors she has heard (from Mr. Wickham) are twisted truths. At the end, as the final process of her realization, she says that â€Å"†¦Vanity, not love, has been my folly.Pleased with the preference of one, and offended b y the neglect of the other, on the very beginning of our acquaintance, I have courted prepossession [pride] and ignorance, and driven reason away where either were concerned. Till this moment, I never knew myself. † Austen contrasts the theme of first impression with the relationship that develops at the beginning of the novel between Mr. Bingley and Jane. She develops a relationship based â€Å"in a vision of love in which women and men care about each other with a passionate tenderness.Jane and Bingley have a natural compatibility for one another. † (Bonaparte, Conjecturing Possibilities) In this relationship, there are no feelings of avarice or greed because â€Å"It was generally evident, whenever they met, that he did admire her; and to her it was equally evident that Jane was yielding to the preference which she had begun to entertain for him from the first, and was in a way to be very much in love. † (Austen 22). Neither of them was worried with wealth, cl ass or family heritage. On the other hand, Mr. Bingley’s sister, Caroline, and his friend Mr.Darcy believe that Jane’s family was not high enough in the social ladder and therefore she did not deserve him. They even tried to intervene in their relationship by breaking them up, but at the end they end up marrying each other. There is no doubt that Jane Austen wanted to install a sense of realization regarding first and false impressions in the readers mind. Pride and Prejudice helps society understand how it behaves through real life examples developed by fictional characters such as Jane, Elizabeth, Mr. Darcy, etc.Pride and Prejudice is a sign of protest Austen uses to rebel against her society and its dependence on first impressions. She tries to make us understand that almost always first impressions are wrong. On the other hand, domestic terrorism are normally carried out by citizens of a particular county within the borders of the same country (White, 2011). In conclusion, terrorism stands out as one of the greatest threat to U.S. homeland security. The situation is further complicated by the recent proliferation of nuclear weapons and the fears of these organization accessing these weapons. Therefore, it is imperative for the government to employ both diplomatic and tactical moves in countering the activities of terrorist organizations. The Role of the Piligimage of Grace in the Henrican Reformation - Essay Example The consequence of the separation from the Catholic Church was the birth of the Protestant denomination. This change was not without challenge however, and in 1536 an uprising of more than 40,000 insurgents in Yorkshire. This uprising, known as the Pilgrimage of Grace, was the largest that the King had faced and as a consequence he was forced to respond to it carefully, resulting in the Pilgrimage having a significant role in the Henrican Reformation. The Pilgrimage of Grace The title the Pilgrimage of Grace is used to refer to one of two things. First, it can refer to the series of revolts that occurred between 1936 and 1937. The revolts are well-documented and were rebellions against Henry VIII and his rule, specifically the dissolution of monasteries and charities. From October to December of 1536 there was a revolt specifically titled the Pilgrimage of Grace which bore a banner with the five wounds of Christ. Technically, the term Pilgrimage of Grace only refers to the second exa mple, but the use of the term to refer to the general revolts of the period is common. In the Yorkshire uprising, lawyer Robert Aske organised and led the men, with the aim of making the uprising appear more legitimate and encouraging other nobles to join. The aim of Aske and many of the other insurgents was to get the King to reconsider the way in which he was handling the country. Specifically, the nobles of the company presented a document that the King was to see, which contained 24 articles, which were religious, economical, social and political. They agreed to dissolve the revolt, if their demands were considered in a parliament and they were pardoned for their role . The pilgrimage was a significant threat to the King. Not only were his own men significantly outnumbered, but he was limited in who he could use to fight the insurgents for fear that any local soldiers that were hired would join the cause. An additional source of concern was that Henry VIII was not able to call o n the nobles for support, as he would normally have, because the nobles were part of the uprising. The promised pardon was never given, and instead Henry VIII heavily prosecuted those who were involved in the rebellion. Effect on the Henrican Reformation The reformation was already well underway by the time that the revolts began. The causes for the revolts are often assumed to be of economic basis, or as a result of conflict occurring between the nobles and the common people. An alternative proposal is that the revolts were essentially religious in nature, spurred on by members of the clergy in the North. Throughout England, but especially in the North, the church was a very important part of the community. The reforms that Henry VIII was instigating represented a large threat to these values . The Pilgrimage was for the most part ineffective at its goals, England did not return to the Catholic Church but instead pressed on towards Protestantism, and the dissolution of monasteries and churches continued. Apart from these actors, other major actors were identified who affect the democracy in Indonesia and affect the bilateral relationship between it and Australia; two non–state actors and one parliamentary actor were recognized as affecting the foreign policy of Indonesia for Australia. These policies help in strengthening the relationship between the countries. The author wrote of four perspectives that explain the bilateral relationship: Historical and Geographical Proximity Perspective: The geographical placing of both lands and their history gives strength to the relationship. Throughout history there has been integration of the people of both countries. The closeness of the countries ensures that a working relationship be maintained. One can’t simply fight with one’s neighbours. The repercussions would be felt by both. Political and Strategic Perspective: Indonesia is important for Australia. Any instability or such occurrences in Indonesia can have a ripple effect extending to Australia because of the strategic placing. Moreover, if they develop a relationship like that of Pakistan and India, their military and financial resources would be tied up in defence of an unseen threat of offense. Identity and Fear Perspective: There is a confusion and struggle of self identity which has caused a slowdown in the maturing of the bilateral relationship. There is no case to which this statement more directly applies than to the art of the Islamic world. † Seeing that Muslims are believers in only one true God of the universe, they have been advised by Prophet Muhammad not to make pictures of human beings, for these pictures may often turn out to become idols for people, thereby turning them away from the Lord of the universe. Hence, Islamic art has focused on anything other than the human form. Muslims have used Arabic calligraphy to express their creativity in countless art works. â€Å"Arabic script lends itself wonderfully to decorative use,† writes Siddiqui. It is the language of the Qur’an, even if it is used to write something other than the Qur’anic verse. The choices are limitless. Thus we find a beautiful piece of calligraphic art as an inscription on a carved wood panel from a door that was made in the late medieval Islamic period (See Appendix). The inscription on the panel consists of the signature of its maker. The script is monumental, with large and rounded proportions. The seven words of the inscription are deeply carved in three horizontal registers. These are set against a scrolling leaf background (Late Medieval Period, 2004). Contrary to the believers in the unseen God, the ancient Egyptians were Pharaoh worshippers. The king of ancient Egypt was the Pharaoh, who appeared larger than life in the art works of the period. Ti Hunting the Hippopotamus is a wonderful depiction of the subject (See Appendix). Carved on a surface of a stone, this is a relief using the typical ancient Egyptian style of frontalism, in which the head is drawn in profile while the body is seen from the front. He is the god of both slaves and animals, and is therefore shown as a higher being as compared to the lesser beings. The slaves in the picture are relaxed. So are the animals. Moreover, the animals shown are more realistic than all humans, perhaps because of the ambivalence felt by the artist toward both the â€Å"higher† and the â€Å"lower beings† within humans (Kremen, 1996). Lastly, the ancient Greeks, who also had plenty of gods and goddesses, downplayed the divine aspects of their gods, unlike the Egyptians, by giving their gods a typically human form. There did not have to be higher or lower beings in ancient Greek art. Instead, the most perfect of figures created were recognized as gods naturally. The ancient Greek civilization enjoyed the beauty of the human form, including the naked human form which was admired for its harmonious proportions. The Torso of Apollo is one of the most perfect examples of this art (See Appendix). Made in 2nd century AD, the torso of marble shows young Apollo, the Greek god of light, music, archery, healing, atonement, prophecy and flocks and herds. The figure was popular with both Greeks and ancient Romans. It is an unclothed manifestation of splendor and courage, only expected to be shown of Apollo, who wears a belt over one shoulder to which a quiver of arrows were attached at his back (Torso of Apollo). By showing the god as distinctly human, the artist inspires into viewers the spirit to take Apollo for a courageous model and turn into heroes themselves. Impact of Technology on Trade Technology plays a crucial role in the development of countries. It is very important both for developed countries and developing countries as technology progress will enable countries to be more competitive in the global market. From the experience of developed countries, their fast development in economy can not be separated from their progress in technology. Technology is becoming the core for the developed countries (Hausmann and Rodrik, 2003). Impact of technology on trade and economy growth Economic development of South Korea started in 1950s and achieved a take-off in economy growth in 1960s. In the initial stage, South Korea applied inward economy growth strategy; however, since 1962 the country began to implement an export-oriented economy development strategy. South Korea is severely dependent on the external markets since its internal market is very limited. The country is highly focused on the export business to create foreign exchange and import the scarce resources. With the development in high-technology fields, South Korea has realized to increase the exports of the high-tech products which have successfully contributed to a rapid economic growth for the country. South Korea has achieved a considerable growth in its GNP from 87 USD in 1962 to 10 936 USD in 2001. This is close to the highly-developed countries. Among the exporting volumes, the high-tech products are increasing year by year. In 1988, the high-tech products accounted for 15.97% of the total expor ting volume. In 1999, the high-tech products reached to 32.2% (Kwon, 2010). The progress in technology has greatly helped South Korea in achieving good result in the global trade market and resulted in a great growth in GDP and its overall economy. Samsung Electronic is a typical successful example in the research and development of technology for South Korea or even for the whole Asian countries. Many technological and electronic manufacturers in Asian countries are trying to learning from Samsung Company. Samsung Electronic Company has made great contribution to South Koreas economic development. Samsung has got its white goods and other products such as mobile phones famous in the global marketplace. In 2000, the export amount of Samsung Electronic has reached to 18.6 billion US dollars which accounted for 11 percent of the total exporting value. In 2004, Samsung has made a breakthrough of 50 billion US dollars of exporting value and accounted for 21% of the total export value in South Korea (Kang and Jin, 2006). The reason why Samsung products can take a great market share in the global trade market is highly dependent on the technology progress. Take Samsung mobile phone as example, with the continuous innovation and progr ess made in the technological field, Samsung mobile phone is now become one of the leading mobile brands in the world. It has already posed a threat to Nokia and Motorolas leading positions in the global mobile phone market (Uimonen, 2000). Facing the fierce competition environment in the global mobile phone market, Samsung mobile phone maintains its strategy to position high-end products for the people with certain consuming capability. High-end products need high-technology to support and continuous improvement in the technology innovation to maintain the high price. Euthanasia :: Free Euthanasia Essay

Euthanasia Should we allow Euthanasia in cases where people who are terminally ill request the right to die? People should have the right to control and chose whether they die or not. However I think they should be in a mentally fit state to do so. If they only have a couple of months to live and can feel the pain if they aren’t injected day after day, then I think they should be given the chance to make decisions for themselves. It is after all their life, it belongs to them and the only judge the only decision maker should be the person themselves. I think being given the gift of life is a wonderful thing but being forced to live spoils what should be a joyful and knowledgeable experience of growing. If people are given millions of choices in life why should they be denied the choice of death? Good pain control makes euthanasia unnecessary I think pain control will only block the pain but it will leave the patient a ‘zombie’. People need to understand that although the pain can be stopped for a certain period of time it will never leave the patient. If the patient wishes to die and is in a mentally fit state to make decisions then I think they should be able to. Nevertheless I believe doctors and nurses should make sure the patient is not depressed. As people often go through stages when they feel insecure and miserable, when they feel death is their only option out. On the other hand people may disagree with me because they think if the pain is stopped then the feeling of being terminally ill is lost, it’s gone, it’s forgotten. They will argue that if the right Human beings should never be killed Human beings should never be killed. A statement that has never fit into perspective for me. Innocent Humans are killed all over the. Still governments have never stopped these immoral things. These people never wanted to die. Yet when it comes to Humans who are terminally ill and want to die, they won’t allow it. I agree that life is a gift and should be lived to the full. But people who cannot enjoy their lives should have the right to end them. Death is not always an evil to be avoided Death is not a bad thing. It can be helpful to those who need it those who are suffering each day, and waiting for death to come to them.

Ophelias Hamlet :: essays research papers

Hamlet’s Ophelia William Shakespeare has written many masterpiece plays and has told a vital story in almost all of them. In the play Hamlet Shakespeare uses melancholy, grief, and madness to pervade the works of a great play. Throughout the play Shakespeare uses such emotional malady within Hamlet, that the audience not only sympathizes with the tragic prince Hamlet, but to provide the very complexities necessary in understanding the tragedy of his lady Ophelia as well. It is the poor Ophelia who suffers at her lover's discretion. Hamlet provides his own self-torture and does fall victim to melancholia and grief, however his madness is feigned. Ophelia and Hamlet each share a common connection: the loss of a parental figure. Hamlet loses his father as a result of a horrible murder, as does Ophelia. Her situation is more severe because it is her lover who murders her father and all of her hopes for her future as well. When looking at her character, one would think she was in grief but quickly turns to madness. Ophelia is made to be this sweet innocent girl but then turns crazy after her father dies and Hamlet leaves for England. People argue that Hamlet has the first reason to be hurt by Ophelia because she follows her father's admonitions regarding Hamlet and his true intentions for their love. Polonius tells Ophelia that Hamlet will not do anything but be fickle with the girls since he is suppose to have an arranged marriage. After telling Ophelia this, Polonius and Claudius try to have Ophelia become bait to find out why Hamlet us acting crazy. Hamlet begins with his overwhelming sarcasm toward Ophelia, "I humbly thank you, well, well, well," he says to her regarding her initial pleasantries (3.1.91). Before this scene, he has heard the King and Polonius establishing a plan to deduce his unusual and grief-stricken behavior. Hamlet is well aware that this plan merely uses Ophelia as a tool, and as such, she does not have much option of refusing without angering not only her busybody father but the conniving King Claudius as well. Hamlet readily refuses that he cared for her. He tells her and all of his uninvited listeners, "No, not I, I never gave you aught" (3.1.94-95). Hamlet has a right to direct his anger to Ophelia because it was her that â€Å"repelled† against him. Her father forced her, and if she did try to disobey her father she could be disowned.

Applying Economics To Current Events

There are so many events going on in the world today. There is a housing market issue, health care reform issue, and companies fighting for paid sick leave from their jobs. There are many more this is just to name a few. The housing market is going to start booming again for a short time. The health care reform created by Obama will continue to be an issue for a long time, and companies are fighting to get paid sick leave when they are ill. There are so many things that have changed in the world, and it sure is not what it used to be. First, the housing market is starting to come back to business, but it is taking some time. â€Å"Between 2002 and 2007, the population of prospective homeowners grew at an average annual rate of 2. 5 million. Over this same time period, the number of households increased by average of 1. 1 million. And to accommodate these newly formed households, homebuilders built an average of 1. 7 million housing units a year† (Maxfield, 2013). That is great for some people. When the United States was in the recession, there were many of people that lost almost everything that they owned. Anyone that is looking to buying a home, or having one built should take careful planning before doing so. People should consider that the United States could go into another recession at any time. Is the person going to be able to afford their home? That is the number one question a person should ask themselves. There are many people that try to live outside of their means. Sure it is nice if the person has a good job that is secure. Most jobs are not securing anymore, especially health care. The health care reform has everyone up in a roar. Some people agree with the reform and others do not. Something has been pulled out of the Affordable Care Act and, â€Å"It gives states just enough power over insurance marketplaces and the Medicaid expansion to continue the unequal and unfair distribution of state-based social services. It allows states to eviscerate Medicaid in ways that don't make sense† (Vox, 2013). The states are still going to have control over everything and even more now. â€Å"In some states, Medicaid pays to save the life of a stroke victim in the hospital, but then denies adequate ehabilitation services and devices to prevent that person's ongoing health problems from rapidly placing further strain on the thin social-service safety net†(Vox,2013). Medicaid used to cover everything that a patient would need. There should not be a change in that. There are some people that cannot afford health care coverage on their own. If a person has a job and the company offers insurance, then yes a person should take it. The people that take advantage of the system and does not take the offered insurance and stays on Medicaid should be fined. Employers are going to have to start paying for their employees to have insurance. The company must have at least 50 full-time employees to start the mandatory coverage. When a company does not provide the coverage, the company will get fined between $2000. 00 and $3000. 00. There are many of companies that do not have that many employees. What are going to happen to all of the small businesses? Are they going to get shut down? Are they going to get a fine for not having some type of insurance coverage for the employees? There are still un-answered questions and there are people wondering what is going to their jobs when the Affordable Care Act goes into full effect. There are also companies that do not offer paid sick leave. There are many states that have already got the law passed that it is mandatory for employers to offer paid sick leave. There may be some people that would abuse the privilege of having this, and not wanting to offer it. There are still honest people in the world that it could be an advantage to. Many people have families and cannot afford to call-in sick when they have the flu, or another illness. That is where the paid sick leave would come in. Employees coming to work sick could be a bigger risk then not letting them have to day off. It could be difficult for some smaller businesses to offer this because of the costs. The restaurant industry could get hit pretty hard because of the administrative costs as well as having to cover peoples’ shifts that are unable to go to work. â€Å"The U. S is the only major industrialized nation without a national paid sick-leave policy Some 145 countries provide paid sick days for short- or long-term illnesses. Japan, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Singapore require employers to provide at least 10 paid sick days† (Koba, 2013). In Conclusion, the world is not what it used to be. The government is eventually going to control the whole world and nobody will have a say on anything. The housing market is slowly coming back up, but are the people going to be able to get a new home and afford it later down the line? The United States is not promising that it will not get back into another recession so the person better only hope that they have a safe, secure job. The Affordable Care Act will be completely controlled by the government, and Medicaid patients will not have the coverage they once had. Companies do not offer paid sick leave to the employees, but some states are trying to make it a law.

Have the Aspirations of the Un’s Founders as Laid Out

The United Nations was established at the San Francisco Conference on October 24 1945. The world had just witnessed the failure of the League of Nations to fulfill its purpose, the prevention of a Second World War. Consequently the countries that had opposed Germany and Japan looked to succeed where they had previously failed in promoting a â€Å"just and peaceful global community† (Taylor; Curtis, 2008 p. 314). The objectives, principles and structure of the organization they hoped would achieve this were recorded in the United Nations Charter. Upon entering the UN, members were required to consent to the set of conditions laid out in this treaty. At the outset there were 51 members. By 2006 this number had grown to include 192 member states, almost encompassing the entire world. Yet whilst the organization has grown in size, the question remains as to whether those aspirations originally laid out in the Charter have actually been met. I will argue that the United Nations has had some success in its capacity as a humanitarian organization, as well as being a useful tool helping to solve international economic, social and cultural problems. However I believe that the UN remains somewhat impotent with regards to issues of international peace and security. The UN Charter is composed of a preamble, followed by numerous articles grouped by topic into a total of 19 chapters. The preamble offers an overview of the hopeful aspirations upon which the UN was founded. The vision that is described consists of four crucial goals. These are then reiterated in the first chapter in a more formal context. The fist target of the UN is â€Å"To maintain international peace and security† (UN Charter). I will argue that the UN is, and indeed always will be incapable achieving this. The second goal laid out in the Charter is â€Å"To develop friendly relations among nations based on respect for the principle of equal rights and self-determination of peoples† (UN Charter). This effectively promotes the concept of state sovereignty, the idea that every state has the right to govern itself without alien intervention. I will argue that this too is unattainable in accordance with UN principles. My case for the failure of the first aim is based upon the principle behind the second aim, and visa versa. The case that I put forewords is that the ideal of simultaneously maintaining peace while promoting sovereignty is unattainable. The other aspirations of the UN include â€Å"solving international problems of an economic, social, cultural, or humanitarian character† as well as â€Å"promoting and encouraging respect for human rights† (UN Charter). I will argue that the UN has indeed had some success in achieving these two objectives. In order to assess whether the United Nations aim to promote international peace and security has been successful, it is first important to have some understanding of the UN Security Council and the way it functions. Originally it consisted of 11 states. In 1965 this number rose to 15. Of these states, five maintain a permanent membership whilst the ten others are elected on a biennial basis. For decisions made by the Security Council to be passed, a majority of 9 of the 15 member states must vote in favor of them. Furthermore this majority must include every one of the permanent member states, effectively granting them veto power over all decisions regarding security. The permanent members consist of â€Å"the USA, Britain, France, Russia (previously the Soviet Union), and China† (Taylor; Curtis, 2008 , p. 15), those states considered to be the great powers at the time the UN was formed. In accordance with the Charter, in the incidence of a perceived threat to international peace the Security Council first attempts to find a nonviolent means to settle the issue. This is described in Chapter VI and may involve settlement or mediation. Other non-violent methods may include â€Å"complete or partial interruption of economic relations and of rail, sea, air, postal, telegraphic, radio, and other means of communication, and the severance of diplomatic relations† (UN Charter: article 41). Where violence is unavoidable the UN may sanction a peacekeeping mission with the objective of affecting a ceasefire or separating rival forces. The principles of UN with regards to international peace and security have now been described. It was the hope in 1945 that the Security Council could be used as a tool to â€Å"save succeeding generations from the scourge of war† (UN Charter: Preamble). However I would argue that just like the League of Nations before it, the fundamental principles behind UN’s security policies are flawed, rendering their aspiration for international peace impossible. It is my belief that the aforementioned policies of the Security Council are incompatible with the principle of state sovereignty, which is also endorsed as an aim of the UN in Article 2 (7) of the Charter, stating that â€Å"Nothing contained in the present Charter shall authorize the United Nations to intervene in matters which are essentially within the domestic jurisdiction of any state†. F. H. Hinsley presents the idea of these two ideals clashing in his book ‘Sovereignty’ (1966). The Peace of Westphalia in 1648 â€Å"legitimized and standardized† (Watson; 1992) the practice of state sovereignty amongst major European powers, requiring them to recognize and respect the territorial integrity of other states. This is widely considered as being the formal introduction of state sovereignty into international relations. Sovereignty essentially refers to â€Å"the supreme authority in a political community† (basiclaw. net; 2004) and implies that states have the right to govern themselves, recognizing no higher authority. However even before such ideas were given proper recognition, states had always recognized their right â€Å"to go to war for any reason whatever, on any pretext at all, if it judged war to be in its interests or necessary for its security† (Hindsley; 1966:p230). It follows that this right is encompassed within those of a sovereign state, which recognize no higher authority and so are free to do that which is in their best interests. Hinsley points out that â€Å"after the end of the nineteenth century states clung tenaciously to this right, believing it to be fundamental to their sovereignty† (1966 p. 30). Yet at the same time, following the devastation of the Second World War, states were undoubtedly disinclined to enter another global conflict. In an attempt to maintain peace the United Nations was formed. Hinsley wrote that the League of Nations Covenant was ‘riddled with compromises which reflect the clash between their conviction that it had become imperativ e to restrict their right to go to war and their conviction that it remained impolitic or impossible to do so† (1966). I would argue that the same could be said for the United Nations Charter, which simultaneously prohibits war whilst insisting on state sovereignty. At the time when the UN was founded, this clash of interests represented in the Charter may not have been of great consequence. Nations were sick of war and were happy to respect sovereignty if it meant they could avert further conflict. This reflected the â€Å"traditional belief that diplomats should ignore the internal affairs of states in order to preserve international stability† (Taylor; Curtis, 2008 p. 20). However over time shifts in the international environment would change this. During the cold war, member states were tentative when it came to any sort of interference within other sovereign states. This was demonstrated in Jean Kirkpatrick’s (1979) essay written in the defending the preservation of brutal dictatorships in Latin America as a means of fighting communism without having to get directly involved (Forsy the 1988: 259-60). Furthermore â€Å"the process of decolonization had privileged statehood over justice†, the UN having â€Å"elevated the right to statehood above any tests of viability, such as the existence of a nation, adequate economic performance†¦Ã¢â‚¬  (Taylor; Curtis, 2008 p. 314). However with the end of the cold war came a shift in the attention of the international community towards â€Å"individual political and civil rights, as well as the right to basic provisions like food, water, health care, and accommodation† (Taylor; Curtis, 2008 p. 314). Charles Beitz exemplified this, being amongst the first to argue against unconditional statehood, claiming that subsequent to independence there must be greater consideration of circumstances of the individual (Beitz 1979). It was argued that these circumstances of the individual were not merely a humanitarian concern, but could potentially be â€Å"a threat to international peace and security. Evidence of a threat to international peace and security could be the appearance of significant numbers of refugees, or the judgment that other states might intervene militarily† (Taylor; Curtis, 2008). This developing association of morality with national interest in the UN agenda is what I believe brings to light the clash between the aspirations of the UN, one being to promoting international peace, the other being the preservation of the â€Å"self-determination of peoples† (UN Charter, article 1). In order to uphold the rights of individuals where they are being neglected, intervention is necessary. Here it seems the UN is caught in a catch 22. On the one hand they can neglect to take interventionist action in order to protect sovereignty. This can be seen in the reluctance of the UN intervene n Darfur which in 2009 had resulted in the death of â€Å"up to 200,000 people and left 2. 7 million homeless† (Tisdall, 2009). Alternatively they have the option of a â€Å"relaxation of the non-intervention principle† (Taylor; Curtis, 2008 p. 323). However this approach is equally problematic in attempting to ensure international peace, creating a â€Å"slippery slope† whereby states will take military action without the approval of the UN (Taylor; Curtis, 2008 p. 314). This is recognized by Hinsley, who points out that â€Å"States easily exploit such loopholes. If they cannot plead self-defense for using force- a difficulty which they rarely encounter – they can use it without declaring war or justify it by claiming that they are acting in a good cause as the Security Council would act if the Security Council were not stalled. † (Hindsley, 1966 p. 233). The 2003 invasion of Iraq can be seen to illustrate this point. Before entering Iraq, America looked to gain UN approval. Whilst there has been great speculation over its motivations for doing so, the justification given to the UN was Iraq’s supposed possession of weapons of mass destruction. The alleged presence of these meant the US could claim they were acting to protect the interests of their people. Later the violation of human rights was also given as a justification. However the UN security council did not come to a decision in the winter of 2003 and â€Å"France and Russia threatened to veto a second Security Council resolution authorizing force† (Taylor; Curtis, 2008 p. 323). Regardless of this response a US-led coalition waged war in Iraq in March 2003. The Iraq War case study demonstrates the impotence of the UN to prevent major powers from pursuing their own agendas, even when these agendas threaten international security. In an interview with the BBC, the United Nations Secretary General, Kofi Annan has said, â€Å"from our point of view and from the Charter point of view [the war] was illegal† (2004). On the other hand a statement from the â€Å"Bush administration’s National Security Strategy of September 2002† (Taylor; Curtis, 2008) claimed that the US â€Å"will be prepared to act apart when our interests and unique responsibilities require† (NSS, 2002: 31). This perfectly illustrates how a state exercising its sovereignty, acting in its own special interests which in this scenario include going to war, is at odds with the principles set out in the UN. I would argue that this failure in not a result of UN administration or procedure. It seems instead that the UN is based upon a flawed principle that attempts to encompass two opposing ideals. A system that acknowledges the fact that states internal affairs are of international consequence and therefore can potentially merit intervention, cannot at the same time achieve its aim to maintain international state sovereignty. We see America is unable to exercise its right as a sovereign state to wage war on Iraq under the terms of the Charter, and so must act outside it. Ultimately I would conclude that the ideals at the heart of the UN have rendered it powerless to prevent international conflict impossible. Likewise the ability to justify interventionist policies through the terms of the charter means that the UN can never fully achieve its aspiration to allow the â€Å"self-determination of peoples†. I have already touched somewhat upon another ambition set out in the UN Charter, the aim to promote & protect human rights. However as yet I have only addressed human rights issues with a view to them potentially being a threat to international peace and security. I shall now go on to look at them in greater detail, explaining why I believe the UN has to some extent been successful, despite the fact that human rights abuse is still rife in the world today. A major problem faced by the UN in their efforts to spread human rights is a lack of trust between states that results in a breakdown of international cooperation. The inclusion of human rights earlier in the essay when focusing on issues regarding security and sovereignty highlights an important point. Since the rise in humanitarian intervention after the end of the cold war, there have been â€Å"doubts about the extent to which ‘humanitarian intervention’ is a separate legal or conceptual category† (Welsh, 2006, p. 81). Between 1991-2000 there were 9 cases of humanitarian interventions in Northern Iraq, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Somalia, Rwanda, Haiti, Albania, Sierra Leone, Kosovo and East Timor (Welsh, 2006). However in all but two cases the UN Security Council or independently acting states did not cite â€Å"humanitarian considerations alone as a basis for intervention† (Welsh 2006, p. 81).

The tasks are: to create a job advert and get my peers to act as applicants; go through the whole recruitment and selection process and at the end choosing the most suitable candidate out of those that applied; choosing the most suitable applicant and offering them the position; producing an induction and motivational programme for the chosen candidate. Sufficient research will be carried out to help the analysis of the recruitment and selection processes. There will be an evaluation judging the effectiveness of chosen approaches. The Recruitment Process Recruitment is the process of generating a pool of capable people to apply for employment to an organisation. The Recruitment Process is when a business looks for and finds a suitable person to fill a certain job position. This includes job description, job adverts, person specification, application forms, short listing, dealing with references, assessing candidates, deciding on the most suitable candidate and then informing those who did not get the job. Businesses need to avoid discrimination by sex, race, disability or age during the recruitment process so that they do not get sued. This allows them to make sure the best candidate gets the job. Firstly the business will need to draw up the Job Description. This usually includes the job title, location, information about the company, the job purpose, a detailed list of job requirements and skills, the salary and benefits, working hours, promotion prospects, who the employee will be responsible to and finally who the employee is responsible for. In order to draw up a suitable job description, the human resource manager interviews the current jobholder and the line manager so that they can do a job analysis. A job description is drawn up because it is important when carrying out appraisals, and it helps analyse jobs and training. It also helps with work force planning and pay determination. They can then use the job description to place the job advertisement. EXAMPLE OF A JOB DESCRIPTION POST TITLE Administration Assistant DIVISION/DEPARTMENT Installation & Facilities Management REPORTS TO Installation & Facilities Manager GRADE 7 AIM To provide administrative support within the Specified Group within the Technical Division. The post holder will be required to work flexibly, in a rapidly developing office environment. It may be necessary to assist, or cover for, other administrative staff from time to time. Next they will need to draw up a Person Specification using the seven-point plan, which was an idea from Alec Rodger. The seven points are: 1. Physique, health and appearance- is the person well groomed? Are their looks suitable? Are their dress sense, voice, hearing and eyesight suitable? Is their health in order? 2. Attainments- what type of educational and vocational qualifications do they have? What is their job experience? 3. General intelligence-What is the level of the person’s general intelligence (obtained through IQ tests)? 4. Special aptitudes- what special skills does the person have? 5. Interests- what are their interests and hobbies? 6. Disposition- do they tend to influence others? Have they got leadership potential? 7. Circumstances- what is their age group? Are they single or married? Are they mobile or not? This usually requires managers to differentiate between essential and desirable qualities under each heading. For example five GCSE’s at a grade C or above might be essential for ‘Attainment’ to do a particular job, whereas two GCE A Levels might be desirable but not essential. Then the job advertisement can be placed. To create the best advertisement you have to make sure that: the advertisement gives a clear picture of what the job entails, the advertisement sets out clearly where the job is located, the advertisement is focused enough to attract people with the right sort of qualifications for the post, the sort of people most likely to apply for the job are suitable, the advertisement indicates opportunities for job development and for personal challenges over time, that an applicant knows how to apply for a job and that the advertisement in its present form will screen out unsuitable applicants. The advertisement should be placed in a suitable place so that the people with the right qualities apply. Most advertisements include the job description, a brief description of the environment of the organization, the location of the organisation and the job, the salary expectation, the contact details, the minimum entrance qualifications, the required job exp erience, the fringe benefits and the organisational identity. A job advert should provide prospective candidates with information but should also deter people who are not suitable for the job. The presentation is also important as it gives people their first impression of the organization. Many legal considerations need to be met when recruiting. The equal pay act 1970 states that there should be equal pay and conditions for people doing the same job and this would apply to the job advert. The Sex discrimination act 1975 states that employers can’t discriminate between potential employees on the fact that they are male or female. The 1986 sex discrimination act states that there must be a similar retirement date for both men and women. The race relation act 1968, 1976, 2000 states that there can be no discrimination against people of different colours, race, ethnicity or national origins. Finally the disability discrimination act 1995 and 2004 states there must be no discrimination at work, and that the employer must provide a suitable workplace for the disabled employees. Here is a flow diagram of the recruitment process: The Selection Process Selection is the process by which managers and others use specific instruments to choose from a pool of applicants a person or persons most likely to succeed in the job(s), given management goals and legal requirements. Firstly you have to draw up a shortlist of the most suitable applicants out of the large number that applied for the job. The people who draw up the shortlist use the job description, person specification and other sets of criteria to reject the people who are not right for the job. They are usually sorted into three piles of suitable candidates, possible candidates and rejects. After this you would send out letters to invite the most suitable candidates to an interview. These letters set out where and when the interview will take place and anything that the candidate will need to do before the interview. Usually, the interviewer creates forms for use during the interview including a list of questions to ask. Equal opportunities requirements state that the candidates must be asked the same questions. Sometimes the interviewer will also draw up a list of criteria for the candidates to meet. Also you will need copies of the interviewee’s application forms, CV’s, and cover letters and copies of the person specification, the job description and interview assessment schedules showing the criteria for the applicants. Interviews are generally relaxed and comfortable so that the applicant can show their best side. A good way to start could be to ask questions about the candidate’s journey to the interview. The interview is a two-way process and although it is a way for the interviewer to find the best candidate for the job, it is also a way for the interviewee to make sure this is a suitable environment for them to be working in. The question asked should relate to the person specification and job description. Most of the time the interviewers will make notes to judge if the candidate meets the requirements. Also questions are asked that need detailed answers. Some jobs involve testing to find out whether certain people have the right personalities to carry out specific types of work. A psychometric test is a way of assessing a person’s personality, drives and motivations. An aptitude test is used to find out whether a candidate is suited to carrying out a particular type of work and involve some form of stimulation of that type of work. At the end of the interview, the interviewer should ask the interviewee if there is anything they would like to ask. Then the interviewer will explain how they will inform the candidate whether or not they got the job in question. Normally candidates will be given feedback on how they performed in the interview. They should be told why they were not suitable for the post, but also tell them what they did well. This feedback should be seen as a positive process and help with the ongoing development of the interviewee. After the most suitable candidate is selected, they will be informed of the choice and they will be asked if then still want the job. This is normally done over the phone straight after the decision has been made. Then the person will accept or reject the job. Legal considerations need to be met when selecting aswell. Here is a diagram of the selection process: Induction Process Induction is a formal initiation of a new employee into a new organization or new position, the job they will have to do and the people they will have to work with. After completing the recruitment and selection processes, the chosen candidate is sent all details that will be needed for the job. This will include the start date and time, place of work, who to ask for on arrival, details of social provisions and details of medical care and pension provisions. The employee could ask for a written statement of the terms and conditions of employment. Induction normally includes giving them a tour of their workplace, teaching them about the aims of the business, giving them some background information about the company, teaching them about health and safety around the company (fire exits e.t.c), how to contact the company when they are absent, ill or late, an introduction to the various people they will be working with and making sure that they know if the person needs training or not. The Induction programme must be suitable for the candidate and also the job role. An induction package would include the objectives for the induction programme, which would set put what you want the employee to get out of the induction. It would also include a timetable for the induction and an outline of the activities that they will have to carry out. Induction is carried out because it allows a new employee to get acquainted with the company and the people in it, it teaches them about company policies, their rights, and the health and safety requirements, and finally it ensures that the employee starts working effectively and productively as soon as possible. By the end of induction the new employee aims to find out as much important information about the company as possible, find out what their part will be in helping the company run efficiently, feel comfortable and optimistic about working at the company and it will help them in personal development and finally find out about their rights and responsibilities. Employees need to be conscious of what they need to do if they are going to be absent or late or if they are ill. If there are too many absences then it will begin to affect the performance of a team. Also if an employee knows they are going to be late then they need to inform management so that appropriate cover can be provided. Most organisation ask employees to get a note from the doctor to prove they have been sick, and a doctor’s certificate if they are away for more than five days. If the new employee is unfamiliar with the software used in the company then they will have to be familiarised with it. Therefore the employee will need to talk through the software with the employee and, if this doesn’t work, send them for training. In some cases on-the-job training is more effective as it undertaken in the workplace and it therefore familiarises them with the computer in the workplace. However, in other cases, off-the-job training is more effective as it is away from the workplace and people who have correct qualifications train them. Motivation Motivation is applying what drives a person, so that they will want to work productively for your company. Everyone is motivated differently. If a business had a motivated workforce then a businesses profitability will be boosted. Different factors of motivation will increase revenue and reduce costs. If an employee is motivated to increase their efforts then there will be higher productivity, if an employee is motivated to take pride in their work then there will be improved quality in work, if an employee is motivated to be loyal to company then there will be a reduced labour turnover and if an employee is committed to a company then it reduces absenteeism. There are many different theories about motivation. Here are two: 1. A. Maslow- Hierarchy of needs In 1954 an American psychologist Abraham Maslow had a theory about what motivated people in the workplace. He believed that all human beings had the same types of needs and this could be organised into a hierarchy of needs. This was his hierarchy: What people need What businesses can offer To achieve their full potential Self-fulfilment needs Training, challenges and opportunities to develop skills Gaining the respect of others; feeling valued; having confidence and self respect Self-esteem needs Reward for achievement promotion and status Being part of the group; giving and receiving affection and friendship Love and belonging needs Opportunities for teamwork; social facilities and positive work relations Security; absence of danger and freedom from anxiety Security needs High standards of healthy and safety; job security; absence of bullying Food, water, air, rest and activity Basic needs Decent pay to enable needs to be met; acceptable hours and conditions He said that firstly lower-level needs have to be met, but to avoid employees feeling irritated higher-level needs should also be met. If an employee feels irritated then they might be demotivated and nonchalant towards their work. 2. F. Herzberg- Two factor theory In the 1950’s the American psychologist Fredrick Herzberg conducted research that asked about motivation. He asked 200 engineers and accountants about the factors in their work that caused job satisfaction and those that caused dissatisfaction. He used the results from his research to develop his Two Factor theory of motivation. In his theory two sets of factors motivate workers, and these were motivators and hygiene factors. Motivator factors- These are factors that could potentially motivate workers by providing job satisfaction. They include a feeling that they have achieved something, praise and recognition of effort, interesting work, responsibility, opportunities for promotion and opportunities for self-improvement. Hygiene factors- All factors that cause dissatisfaction are to do with the working environment. These include company policy, relationships with supervisors and colleagues, working conditions, pay and status and security. Financial incentives There are many different financial incentives. These are: * Wages, salaries and bonuses * Profit sharing * Share options There are many different types of wages. Flat rate is when you get paid weekly or monthly and it is based on a set number of hours. Time rate is when you receive a set rate hour and then pay overtime if any is done. Piece rate is when you are paid for what is made as long as it meets quality standards. Bonuses are paid if an employee has been working hard at times like Christmas when people are likely to work less hard as the holiday season comes in. Commission is a type of salary based on the percentage of sales made by a salesperson. Profit Sharing is when employees are given bonuses based on the profit made by the organisation. This will help employees see that if the business is doing well, they will do well also. Share options are when employees buy shares in the business and then are rewarded according to how well the organisation is doing. This also means that they will get paid dividends as they are shareholders. Non Financial Incentives There are also many types of non-financial incentives. These are: * Goal Setting * Perks and status symbols * Appraisals * Meeting training needs Goal setting is when managers set goals for employees to work towards. This can make the employer feel like they’ve achieved something by reaching their set goal. A perks is when you get something extra in return for doing a particular job, and an example of a status symbol is having a sign outside you door. An appraisal is meeting between an employee and an appraiser, where targets are set, and also seen whether they manage to meet their targets from the period before that. Finally, meeting training needs is important; as it makes sure that the employee has a good knowledge of all the equipment they are working with. Barnet Burnt Oak Leisure Centre The leisure centre chosen for this project is Barnet Burnt Oak Leisure Centre, which is located on Watling Avenue in Burnt Oak. Their indoor facilities include a state-of-the-art Wellness Health and Fitness centre with 100 pieces of the latest equipment, dance studio with an extensive group exercise programme, a crà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½che, a 4 court badminton sports hall, basketball, trampolining, football, netball, gymnastics and an indoor facilities changing room. Their outdoor facilities include an all-weather pitch for 7-a-side football and hockey, one Junior 11-a-side and two 7-a-side grass football pitches, 2 outdoor tarmac areas for netball, basketball, football and tennis, and outdoor facility changing rooms. Customer Service Advisor I am recruiting for a Customer Service Advisor at the Barnet Burnt Oak Leisure Centre. The Customer Service Advisors main job is to get people to join the gym. They have to be able to handle all different types of customers. They are expected to keep up to date with product and company policy changes in order to answer any customer queries. They have to have good communication skills, patience and common sense. They must be polite and friendly, calm, even when under pressure, thorough and accurate and finally they have to be interested in working with people. They have to be able to work as part of a team and on their own. They have to be over 18. Recruitment Process When advertising for a position at the Barnet Burnt Oak leisure centre, they firstly write up their job description. This tells us that the job is for a Customer Service Advisor, and that it is located at the Barnet Burnt Oak Leisure Centre. It tells us some important information about the company, the job purpose, a detailed list of job requirements and skills, the salary and benefits of the job, working hours, promotion prospects, who the employee will be responsible for and finally who the employee will be responsible for. Next they draw up a person specification. They normally try to look for people who are patient and have good communication skills and common sense. Firstly they try to recruit internally. The advantages of doing this are that it requires a shorter induction period, the employer will be more aware of the candidates skills and it is quicker and cheaper than recruiting externally. However the disadvantages of this are another vacancies will be created and this will also have to be filled and external candidates may be more suitable for the job. Therefore, if their internal recruitment is unsuccessful then they recruit externally and place an advert in the local press. There is no set qualifications needed to be a Customer Service Advisor but you have to be over 18 and you have to have a minimum of one to two years experience in any job. Selection Process At the Barnet Burnt Oak Leisure Centre they hold open days where they invite people to the centre to fill in an application form, and then if they meet the criteria set out in the person specification then they are invited to stay for an interview. The interview is on a one to one basis. The candidates are asked about their relevant experience and qualifications and they are asked what they would do in a particular situation at the leisure centre. Each question asked is worth 12 points and they do not consider anyone whose answer is less than 8 points. If the person is unsuccessful then they are told straight away, otherwise they are told within 2 days over the phone. Then they do a shadow shift and they are set mini tasks over three days to help them decide whom they want to recruit. Other employees are asked what they think of the new employee and so there is a lot of teamwork involved in the decision. Induction Process When the most suitable candidate is informed that they have the job, they are invited back to the centre and they do on-the-job training. On-the-job training would be learning to use a certain database that is used at the leisure centre. Their skills and qualifications are monitored and if they need extra they are sent on off-the-job training course. Included in the induction process is health and safety, which includes showing them where fire exits are. Motivation Process There are no specific motivational tools used at the Barnet Burnt Oak Leisure Centre, just to be cheerful, and don’t force yourself to do it. Legal Dimension The Leisure Centre follows the Sex discrimination act 1975 which states that employers can’t discriminate between potential employees on the fact that they are male or female; the 1986 sex discrimination act states that there must be a similar retirement date for both men and women; the disability discrimination act 1995 and 2004 states there must be no discrimination at work, and that the employer must provide a suitable workplace for the disabled employees; the race relation act 1968, 1976, 2000 states that there can be no discrimination against people of different colours, race, ethnicity or national origins and finally, the equal pay act 1970 states that there should be equal pay and conditions for people doing the same job. If they do discriminate they are liable to be sued. Simulated practice I decide that to understand more fully the stages within recruitment and selection, I had to take the role of an employer. Recruitment Firstly I drew up my Job Description. This included the job title, location, and information about the company, the job purpose, a list of job experience and qualifications needed, the salary, working hours, and finally the person that the employee is responsible to. Job purpose * Get people to join the gym. * Basic customer care i.e. showing people where things are (toilets, crà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½che e.t.c.). Qualifications * No set qualifications needed Experience * At least 1-2 years experience in work Salary * à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½16,000-à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½17,000 per annum Working hours * 40 hours per week Reports to * Manager: George I did this job description in this way because I thought it would screen out unsuitable candidates. When I was shortlisting my candidates I realized that perhaps it could have been more specific in the qualifications and experience sections and possible could have had a minimum requirement of 5 A*-C grades in GCSE for qualifications and for experience could have said that 1-2 experience in customer service. Next, I drew up a Person Specification using Alec Rodger’s seven-point plan. Physique, health and appearance * Must be committed to a healthy lifestyle * Must be smartly dressed * Must be able to see the writing on a computer screen Attainments * Min of 5 A*-C grade at GCSE (desirable) * 1-2 years experience in work General Intelligence * Must have common sense Special Aptitudes * Patience Interests * Fitness Disposition * Good communication skills Circumstances * Must be over 18 * Marital status: Single (Desirable) * Mobile (Desirable) I decided to do my person specification in this way because again I thought that it would screen out the unsuitable candidates. It was better than the job description, but it also had its own faults. I could have expanded on my special aptitudes, and included enthusiasm. I could have also expanded on the interests and added working with computers and working with people. Finally, I could have added to the disposition and added good written skills and good ICT skills. Then the job advertisement can be placed. To create my job advertisement I stated clearly in the title what job it is so that people who are looking for this sort of job will read the rest of the advert. The job description would hopefully have deterred unsuitable candidates. Again like the job description and person specification it didn’t do as good a job as I would have hoped. However, I did get a lot of potential candidates that were suitable for the job. Selection I received many different CV’s and then I sent them all letters of invitations. This letter sets out what job the interview is for, where and when the interview will take place, anything the candidate needs to bring and who to ask for arrival so that the candidate will be fully prepared for the interview. When I created my application form (See appendix) I considered all the factors that all good application forms have. The questions I decided to put on the application were designed to show me which candidates were more suitable than others. This was effective when it came to shortlisting, because it was shown that some candidates couldn’t read simple instructions like ‘Please complete this application form in black ink’. I created a list of 17 interview questions (See appendix) to ask my candidates. The interview questions were my most successful tool as they were what showed me the candidate’s personalities. It was from this that I made my final decision about the candidate I chose. I informed the most successful candidate by phone to gain immediate acceptance. I did not inform the candidates not chosen as it would have been too time consuming. Evaluation My job description and person specification were problematic, as they did not develop some of the points made. In the job description, it was when it cam to relevant qualifications and experience; and in the person specification the disposition, interest and special aptitudes. My job advert was very good in filtering unsuitable candidates but possibly not as much as I had initially wanted. My selection process was definitely more successful. The interview questions helped me get an insight into how the candidates worked and if they would be perfect for the job. I did not break any legal considerations when I was recruiting, selecting, motivating and inducting. I also asked my potential employees the same interview questions so that there was no unfairness when it came to picking my final appl icant. I also fitted equal opportunities into my application form. If the activity were repeated I would change my job description and person specification so that it would expand on what I have already done and it would help me be more selective about whom I interviewed and chose. If a different job role had been chosen that I had more knowledge about then I possible could have produced better human resources documentation and developed more into areas I didn’t know. However this job role was a good choice and I think it was done to the best of my ability at the time. In hindsight, however, I know that I could have done better and expanded more on certain ideas I had. I am now more aware of recruitment and selection process, and it will help me to get a job in the future because I will have a better understanding of how an applicant in selected.
